Here is the color version of the piece in my last post, and also a new piece I am currently working on, I am still in the inking stage. I'm starting to become more comfortable with the medium, and am finding that working in pen (and watercolors) is really working for me. The color version of the owl piece was done digitally and not in watercolors, because I discovered the paper I used for that piece was not the greatest choice for watercolor, however in this new piece I'll be painting in watercolors once the black and white is done. There is something about working in pen and using hatchwork for rendering that I really enjoy; there's almost a meditative quality to it because working in this way forces you to work relatively slowly. Mistakes are harder to fix...it will take time to get accustomed to this way of working for me, which is very different than the way I have been working for years. Nevertheless, I am happy with this new direction my personal work is taking.

The owl piece looks pretty sweet, but what I'm really enjoying is you mark making in the second piece.
I can definitely tell that you are becoming more comfortable with the media and those marks seem really personal and it seems as though you love your paper which i what I think the best part of intimate mediums such as, ink or pencil.
Mmm, yes, watercolor paper is quite a key thing. I am enjoying arches hotpress recently.
I agree that this is an exciting new direction, and I am truly drawn in, forgive the pun, by your second black and white piece here. I enjoy the balanced combination of characteristic, meticulous marks and simple line work. The tree, having great affection for them at large, is particularly striking. I think the fluidity of its upwards growth alludes well to the Japanese concept of nature spirit. It looks living, for sure.
Looking forward to the traditional coloring!
